No More Excuses: One Blogger’s View

I found this interesting post today:
If one were to ask any given selection of police departments across the country what they are doing to stay in touch with their citizens, he would receive a mixture of responses but my guess would be that a few or more of them would be that they don’t stay in touch. When asked why, they would provide more mixed responses such as: “why should we?”, “we can’t fund the required technology”, “we don’t have the time”, etc. From Christa Miller’s site, Cops 2.0, Apr 2009

If you have time, you might want to read the entire article. There are some interesting things happening that will let PIOs reach out to their communities.

Thank you for the link back, Rich! Unfortunately I can’t take credit for that particular quote; it came from my guest, Chief Brandon Perkins of the Tyrone GA PD, who graciously agreed to let me post his blog in its entirety.
In addition, I’m working on a case study based on further discussion with Chief Perkins. I hope to post that very soon and I think it will add to your members’ awareness – for instance, we discussed allowing field supervisors to post emergencies rather than strictly rely on PIOs (especially in the wee hours). Food for thought anyway.
Thank you again!

Thanks, Christa. I’ve changed the attribution on the post. I knew that Chief Perkins had written the guest article. I guess “Reblog” didn’t carry the attribution through when it posted. Good catch.
And, there are many agencies that do allow for supervisors to post statements or provide updates. Unfortunately, some are not as well trained in this area as they could be. I think we can do more across the board in our agencies to make sure we have the right information presented in the proper way. That will take training and, of course, acceptance of our administrators.
What do the rest of you think about Christa’s case study idea? I’m curious to read more!
