Under general direction, will implement communication strategies to build, maintain and enhance positive relationships between the ASU Police Department and local, statewide and national media outlets.  Will function as a resource for the department to communicate its story and perspective to Arizona communities, stakeholders, taxpayers, elected officials and appropriate national audiences.

Schedule: Monday-Friday 8:00AM-5:00PM; to include extended hours as needed.

Salary: $38,160 – $48,000 per year; DOE

Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Journalism or related field AND three (3) years of experience in public affairs, which may include government relations, community relations, international outreach or marketing; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities have been achieved.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience working in a law enforcement agency in either a sworn or civilian position
  • Knowledge of general news writing, editing and distribution of news and features releases- Knowledge of general theories and complex principles and practices of marketing, public relations, public information and basic communication techniques; advertising and publicity techniques and practices; English language usage and terminology used by various media; HTML and website production; project management and research methods/techniques;
  • Experience with electronic media (e.g., internet, radio and/or television), creating and monitoring the content of professional website and standard social media, including social media analytics
  • Experience in creating social media content for a professional entity
    Knowledge of media sources and contacts
  • Experience in public relations and translating material for release to general media for public consumption, including printing techniques and style guidelines for writing press releases and publications.
  • Evidence of effective communication, both verbal (including public speaking) and written.
  • Experience in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with media personnel and the general public
  • Evidence of being bilingual English/Spanish a plus, including ability to speak, translate and write in both languages
