This position starts at a salary of $96,867.00 (GS-13), with promotion potential to $114,468.00 (GS-14).

PROMOTION POTENTIAL: Future promotions will be dependent on your ability to perform the duties at a higher level, the continuing need for an employee assigned to the higher level, and administrative approval.

EMERGENCY ASSIGNMENT: For all nonbargaining unit positions, the following applies: Every FEMA employee has regular and recurring emergency management responsibilities, though not every position requires routine deployment to disaster sites. All positions are subject to recall around the clock for emergency management operations, which may require irregular work hours, work at locations other than the official duty station, and may include duties other than those specified in the employee’s official position description.

Travel requirements in support of emergency operations may be extensive in nature (weeks to months), with little advance notice, and may require employees to relocate to emergency sites with physically austere and operationally challenging conditions. Relocation expenses are not authorized for this position.

Job Summary and Details for Application

Reporting to the Mayor, the Public Information Officer serves as the communications liaison for the Mayor and the City; represents the City as spokesperson to the news media and the public, including representing the City at public meetings, news briefings or other public events. Coordinates and participates in the development, communication, and delivery of information designed to keep the public informed of the City’s programs, events, accomplishments, and services through the use of various communications media and personal contact. Establishes and fosters proactive positive media relations, coordinates interviews and press conferences with City officials, produces news releases, writes speeches, answers day to day inquiries from local, national and international media and the general public regarding City business; develops and implements a media strategy that puts a positive face on the City, emphasizing the City services and supports the branding and marketing efforts geared to enhancing economic development, and develops and maintains a comprehensive public information and communications programs to increase community awareness of City current and new services and programs; publicizes and promotes varied City programs using a variety of electronic media and traditional media.

QUALIFICATIONS: This position requires a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Journalism, Public Relations, English, Communications, Marketing, Advertising, Business or Public Administration, or related field and five (5) years experience in public relations/public information, communications, advertising, marketing, news writing or reporting, or any equivalent combination of
training and experience.

A valid State of Florida driver’s license, required. A valid driver’s license from any state (equivalent to a State of Florida Class E) may be utilized upon application; with the ability to obtain the State of Florida driver’s license within 30 days from day of appointment.

SALARY: Depending on qualifications, the starting salary for this position is in the range of $$54,909 -$82,364.

Under the direction of the County Administrator, develops and coordinates a comprehensive communication strategy and all public relations activities for the County. Degree from a (4) four year college or university with a major in communications, journalism, English or related field; and (5) five years of proven increasing responsible exp. in public information, related training, or mass communication field. A comparable amount of education, training and experience may be substituted for the minimum requirement if determined the job duties can be performed.

I learned so much at the conference. I have a survey question for the
membership and am looking for feedback.

If you are a uniformed professional PIO going to an incident, do you respond:

1. with lights\siren
2. with the flow of traffic and get there when you get there?

     Anyone who would like to run for an office must declare their intention by sending an email to the Board (nioa@comcast.net) by June 1^st.  Setting this deadline will give the Board an opportunity to ensure that the candidate is in compliance with by-laws in terms of membership status and conference attendance. 

   The by-laws state “Any person wishing to run for office must have been a regular member in good standing for three consecutive years, including the year of the nomination and must have also attended at least two NIOA conferences in a five-year period, including the year of the nomination, in order to be eligible.”

We also believe that this conference is the finest conference available for PIOs to hone their skills, receive new insights to help them improve themselves as PIOs and therefore benefit their agencies, and of course, to build networks with others that can help when help is needed.

As past NIOA Presidents have done, I am providing a letter for members to share with their chief or administrator to help show the value of the annual training conference. Please download, print and present it to your leaders so that they might better understand the overall value of this conference.
