Communications Director

Grand Rapids, MI

This executive level position reports to the Assistant City Manager and provides support and counsel to the City Commission and executive office in all communications matters related to the City of Grand Rapids. This position is responsible for leading development and implementation of a strategic communications plan that maximizes proactive communications efforts while being responsive, as needed. This communications professional will serve as the primary media spokesperson on all City-related issues, including immediate crisis response, unless a City leader or department head is designated as the spokesperson.

This position is a team leader who manages the Office of Communications staff in the implementation of the City’s strategic communications plan. The Director serves as the Office of Communications representative on the City of Grand Rapids Communications Task Force, and leads other departments in coordinating and improving overall external communications programs. This person also works with the executive office, City Commission and staff to establish and enhance relationships and partnerships with local business and community groups.

Minimum Training and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, marketing, law or related field;
  • Seven years of experience in communication, journalism or related field
  • Multiple years of demonstrated experience in designing, managing and operating communication campaigns, projects and initiatives for a large corporate or other large institution

Communications and Marketing Manager

Petaluma, CA

Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART) is the Bay Area’s newest passenger rail service providing a safe, reliable and congestion-free transportation option for Marin and Sonoma counties. As the leader of SMART’s communications efforts, the Communications and Marketing Manager will provide oversight and direction to staff engaged in public information/community outreach activities and will assist Executive staff with media relations and communications. This position reports directly to the General Manager. As the head of the District’s Community Outreach Department, the Communications and Marketing Manager is responsible for the setting the strategic vision for SMART’s overall communications, marketing, advertising, and branding programs.

Any combination of education and experience that is equivalent to the following minimum qualifications:
Education:  Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university with a degree in Marketing, Business, Advertising, Public Administration, Communications or a related field.
Experience: Five (5) years of marketing, public outreach or communications experience; at least one year of experience must be in transportation, public transit or a related field; plus Two (2) years of supervisory experience.

The annual salary for this position is $137,883 – $167,606 depending on experience and qualifications. Includes excellent benefits.
