Under general supervision, performs a variety of special projects and assists with the coordination of Police and Fire Departments or Public Safety (PS) internal and external communications, marketing and public information including internet website maintenance on behalf of the Police Chief and Fire Chief.

Activities may include special events, public forums, press conferences, groundbreakings, ribbon cuttings, dedications, community cleanup projects and other ceremonies; responsible for the dissemination of information and recommended communication strategies, primary media liaison; positive press releases. May also assist the Police and Fire Chief in the development of newspaper columns, speeches; and preparing various periodic and special reports.

Employee works in accordance with Police and Fire Administration directives and is expected to exercise considerable independence and initiative.

The Office of Highway Safety Community Relations Officer is responsible for all outreach necessary to support initiatives aimed at reducing motor vehicle crashes, injuries and fatalities on Delaware roadways.

The incumbent will develop an annual communications strategy that includes each priority area and identifies the countermeasures to be utilized to change driver behavior, including paid media, earned media and community outreach.

Job Requirements

1. Six months experience in public relations or media relations to establish and promote a positive image and inform or influence specific audiences through the use of internal and external communications such as public forums, print or electronic media, speech writing, writing/editing, marketing, advertising, or special events.

2. Six months experience in gathering, organizing, formatting, translating, or interpreting information into forms more easily understood by the media or public, and disseminating the information through the use of print, broadcast or electronic media.

3. Six months experience in public speaking which includes gathering, preparing and presenting information to the public or media groups.

4. Six months experience in developing, planning and directing public events, campaigns, programs, or services to meet community needs.

5. Knowledge of developing policies, procedures or programs for dissemination of information to the public or media groups.

This position is located in Milton, Florida, and will be responsible for coordinating county communications and releasing accurate and timely information to Santa Rosa County residents, the media and board of county commissioners’ employees. Duties include seasonal campaigns, managing crisis and disaster related information, as well as the day-to-day management of internal and external communication strategies.

The successful candidate must be a graduate of an accredited four year college or university with a degree in journalism, media relations, communications, public administration or related field and six (6) years recent experience in community/media relations, public relations for a government agency or for a private agency serving local government clients.
