The candidate we seek will:

  • Serve as an official spokesperson in external communications for an agency or other city, county or state organization; or experience in corporate communications/public relations.
  • Prepare and disseminate information to the general public, media, outside agencies and community agencies and organizations through news conferences, phone calls, and social media.
  • Develop, organize and execute a comprehensive departmental communications and public relations program.
  • Engage in educating residents through social media and other digital and print platforms.

The incumbent of this position will be responsible for assisting with the organization, development, and dissemination of public information via digital and print platforms.

The public information officer works under general supervision in the Police Department, performing difficult professional and administrative work planning, organizing, developing and implementing communication actions, activities and messaging though social media, website content, and other digital and traditional marketing, advertising and public relations platforms.

Typical functions:

  •  Assists in the planning, development, implementation, and administration of the Department’s communication plan and strategies.
  • Creates, plans, implements, and monitors social media campaigns.
  • Creates and develops content for social media platforms and electronic distribution.
  • Creates and manages content on the Department’s website.
  • Writes, edits, and distributes press releases and media advisories.
  • Creates and designs flyers, pamphlets and other print media.
  • Develops electronic and print media advertisements.
  • Assists in public relation actions and activities.
  • Assists with implementing the Department’s public information programs.
  • Enhances media relations.
  • Assists in the preparation and dissemination of emergency information and communications.
  • Monitors the Department’s social media performance.
  • Monitors social media groups, trends, tools and applications and recommends actions.
  • Conducts statistical analysis.

Minimum Education and Training

Requires a Bachelor’s degree in public relations, marketing or related field supplemented by two (2) years of professional public relations or marketing experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Requires completion of a Public Information Officer training. Must possess and maintain a valid state of Florida driver’s license.
